How to write newsletters that support your mission

Many non-profits treat newsletters as a monthly update, sharing the latest news, new appointments or upcoming events. But if your newsletter only reports what’s going on, it’s missing its true potential.
Every content decision should start with your organisation's mission - each story, update and call-to-action should be illustrating and supporting your cause.
So before you hit send, ask:
How does this support our mission?
What action do we hope it inspires?
Here are three steps to turn your mission into measurable newsletter goals:
1. Start with your mission: What is your organisation ultimately trying to achieve?
E.g. Our mission is to reduce loneliness in our community.
2. Identify measurable outcomes: Decide what success looks like in concrete terms.
E.g. Connect 50 volunteers with local residents over the next three months.
3. Translate into newsletter goals: Break the outcome into achievable actions that your emails can drive.
E.g.
Highlight volunteer opportunities in every newsletter.
Share short stories of residents and volunteers connecting.
Encourage readers to sign up for local events.
By translating your mission into 2-3 newsletter goals, you give your content focus and purpose. Each email becomes a tool to move your organisation closer to its mission, not just a routine update.
