3 simple ways to find out more about your audience

Knowing why people subscribe helps you write newsletters they actually want to read. And you can find that out without spending a penny - or much precious time - in these three low-effort ways.

1. Ask them directly

A short survey or even a one-question poll can tell you a lot. Try some of these questions:

  • What made you sign up?

  • What do you most enjoy?

  • What problem do we help you to solve?

  • How often do you want to receive it?

2. Have an informal chat

Take time to speak to people at your events or projects - or get into a conversation in social media comments. If you're on Substack, try out the chat function.

Ask people:

  • What do you like most about our newsletter?

  • What would make you subscribe?

  • What would you like to see more of?

3. Listen on social media

Check your comments, shares and DMs.

Ask yourself:

  • Which subjects spark conversation?

  • How can I incorporate those into my newsletter?
